If you ever thought what happens on Earth stays on Earth, think again.
Astronomers have now reported that we are sending more signals into space than intended, and we might not be the only ones in the Universe listening in.
Using the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) in Western Australia - one of three precursor instruments to the ultimate radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) - astronomers have found that the Moon is an effective mirror of the radio pollution that the Earth radiates into space, as it reflects the signals from our TV and radio stations in the FM band (87.5-108 MHz).
In a fleeting glance at the Moon, the MWA telescope picked up every breaking news story, every Top 10 hit, every football score, every press conference, every national anthem, every soap opera, mixed together in a noisy echo of all the Earth's FM radio signals played simultaneously.

The Solar Killshot - The Facts
The solar storm of 1859, also known as the 1859 Solar Superstorm,or the Carrington Event, was a powerful solar storm in 1859 during solar cycle 10.
Aurorae were seen around the world, even over the Caribbean; those over the Rocky Mountains were so bright that their glow awoke gold miners, who began preparing breakfast because they thought it was morning.
People who happened to be awake in the northeastern US could read a newspaper by the aurora's light.
Telegraph systems all over Europe and North America failed, in some cases shocking telegraph operators. Telegraph pylons threw sparks and telegraph paper spontaneously caught fire. Some telegraph systems continued to send and receive messages despite having been disconnected from their power supplies.
The so called solar maximum, expected to peak in 2013. Some U.S. experts estimate as much as a 7 percent chance of a superstorm in the next decade, which seems a slight risk, but the effects would be so wide-ranging, that it has drawn official concern.
May we expect a Carrington Event in 2013?

A sign of the time: Phenomenal Roll Cloud over Curitiba, Brasil - Dec 17, 2012
A sign of the time. A phenomenal roll cloud formation filmed over Curitiba, Brasil on December 17, 2012.
An arcus cloud is a low, horizontal cloud formation. Roll clouds and shelf clouds are the two types of arcus clouds. A shelf cloud is usually associated with the leading edge of thunderstorm outflow; roll clouds are usually formed by outflows of cold air from sea breezes or cold fronts in the absence of thunderstorms.

Strange Sky Phenomenon Recorded Across Eastern U.S. Before Hurricane Sandy - Oct, 2012
This phenomenon is called Sundogs, Mock Suns, Phantom Sun or Parhelia.
NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office head Bill Cooke says that he had, "never seen anything quite like it." Another onlooker, Kyle Winkleman, called it a "once-in-a-decade event."
Spaceweather writes that the extremely rare apparition was "almost certainly connected to Hurricane Sandy":
The core of the storm swept well north of Alabama, but Sandy's outer bands did pass over the area, leaving behind a thin haze of ice crystals in cirrus clouds. Sunlight shining through the crystals produced an unusually rich variety of ice halos.
"By my count, there are two sun dogs, a 22 degree halo, a parahelic circle, an upper tangent arc, and a parry arc," says Chris Brightwell, who also photographed the display. "It was amazing."
These were all recorded a few days or less prior to Hurricane Sandy making landfall.
Here is the video compilation of this beautiful, strange, rare nature phenomenon.

NOC 'white whale' mimicking human speech (Video)
A new paper published by the National Marine Mammal Foundation in the scientific journal Current Biology sheds light on the ability of marine mammals to spontaneously mimic human speech. The study details the case of a white whale named NOC who began to mimic the human voice, presumably a result of vocal learning.
"The whale's vocalizations often sounded as if two people were conversing in the distance," says Dr. Sam Ridgway, President of the National Marine Mammal Foundation. "These 'conversations' were heard several times before the whale was eventually identified as the source. In fact, we discovered it when a diver mistook the whale for a human voice giving him underwater directions."
As soon as the whale was identified as the source, NMMF scientists recorded his speech-like episodes both in air and underwater, studying the physiology behind his ability to mimic. It's believed that the animals close association with humans played a role in how often he employed his 'human' voice, as well as in its quality.

Russian boy discovers 30,000 year old woolly Mammoth
An 11-year-old boy from a nomadic family in Russia's north has stumbled upon a massive well-preserved woolly mammoth, in what scientists describe as the best such discovery since 1901.
Yevgeny Salinder, whose family lives near a polar station in the northern Taimyr Peninsula, discovered the frozen prehistoric animal when he was strolling along the banks of the Yenisei River in late August.
Scientists soon reached the spot to examine the carcass, which has scraps of fur, plenty of flesh, an ear, a tusk, some bones and an intact reproductive organ.
The 15 - 16 year old mammoth was 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighed about 1,100 pounds, which will be unofficially called Zhenya ( after the nickname of the boy who discovered it), is supposed to have died about 30,000 years ago.
The mammoth carcass will be transported to the Krasnoyarsk region and from there, to researchers in Moscow.
Global warming has thawed ground in northern Russia that is usually almost permanently frozen, leading to the discoveries of a number of mammoth remains.
The carcass will become an exhibit at the Taymyr Regional Studies Museum in Russia.

Amazing Videos Of The Vampire Squid From Hell And Camouflaging Octopus
Two amazing videos of the vampire Squid and a camouflaging Octopus.
For years marine biologists have puzzled over what the mysterious vampire squid eats.
Recent research by Henk-Jan Hoving and Bruce Robison at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute finally reveals the answer.
These deep-sea creatures use long, retractile filaments to passively harvest particles and aggregates of detritus, or marine snow, sinking from the waters above.
This feeding strategy, unknown in any other cephalopod (this group of animals includes squid and octopods), allows vampire squid to thrive in the oxygen minimum zone where there are few predators but marine detritus is abundant.
Even more amazing is this video of a camouflaging octopus.

The Most Incredible Volcano Video of ALL Time
The Most Incredible Volcano Video ever shot!
Geoff Mackley, Bradley Ambrose, Nathan Berg, after an epic struggle with the weather for 35 days, we became the first people ever to get this close to Marum Volcano's famed lava lake on Ambrym Island, Vanuatu.
Coming within 30 metres of the lava lake down a watercourse, it was possible to stand the heat for only 6 seconds.
With Fire Brigade breathing apparatus and heat proof proximity suit it was possible to stand on the very edge and view the incredible show for over 40 minutes.

Lightning Hits SUV While Driving in Russia (Video)
What happens when lightning strikes a vehicle? The answer, gleaned from anecdotal observations, is all the way from "Nothing" to "Wow! What a mess . . . my car is a disaster."
Electrically speaking, at lightning's higher frequencies, currents are carried mostly on the outside of conducting objects. A thick copper wire or a hollow-wall metal pipe will carry most of the lightning on outer surfaces. This phenomenon is called "skin effect." The same holds true for lightning when it strikes metal vehicles: the outer surface carries most of the electricity. The persons inside this steel box can be likened to protected by a partial Faraday cage.

Mysterious 'Underground Sounds' + Tremors in India Since Aug. 25 - Sep. 9, 2012
Thane, Sep 1 (PTI) Reports of mysterious underground sounds in Jawhar taluka of the district have promoted the local administration to take help from geological experts to unravel reasons behind the phenomenon. Residents of Kadidond village in the tribal-dominated taluka have complained about hearing such sounds several times since August 25, sources in district headquarters said today.
Following this, the local tehsildar, accompanied with other officials, visited the village for an on the spot assessment and to instill confidence among the anxious villagers. Tehsildar Urmila Patil said she visited the village after getting complaints about underground booms. Patil said she immediately got in touch with Met Department in Mumbai and told them about the mysterious sounds.
However, the Department officials maintained that no tremor-related activity had been recorded from the village or anywhere in the taluka, she said. The administration has now requested geological experts to visit the village and give their opinion about the unexplained occurrence, Patil said.
